TEXAS FAM TRIP
Howdy!
That might just give you a clue to the fact that I have recently returned from a fantastic week in The Lone-Star State of Texas – courtesy of our good friends at North America Travel Service.
We flew from Heathrow aboard a British Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner – a really comfortable aircraft – non-stop to Austin (the airline’s new route).
Austin is a comparatively small but very welcoming airport – where it only took us five minutes to clear immigration!
This vibrant, friendly and safe city is also known as the Musical Capital of the USA. During our stay here we visited the renowned Continental Club where we enjoyed listening to the country singer, Dale Watson. For Formula One fans the Circuit of the Americas is just outside the city and the Hill Country with its beautiful lakes and stunning scenery is well worth a trip.
Our next stop was San Antonio – the authentic Tex-Mex experience where we enjoyed Riverside Walk and a visit to The Alamo.
Then into the heart of the cattle country for a night at a ranch (the high-point of the trip for me) to experience life as a cowboy, horseback riding, feeding long-horn cattle and clay-pigeon shooting.
Leaving our ranch we headed for the cowboy town of Ft. Worth where we toured The Stockyard (the historical Wild West district) and enjoyed that uniquely American event, a rodeo. We also visited Billy Bob’s – the world’s largest Honky-Tonk venue, which can hold up to 6,000 people and it was amazing to see people of all age groups letting their hair down.
For something a little less ‘Wild West’ head to Sundance Square with its great restaurants, bars and nightlife.
Our final stop was the modern and cosmopolitan city of Dallas where we took in the Sixth Floor Museum which tells the story of one of the darkest days in recent American history – the assassination of President John F. Kennedy – a must for all history buffs.
Of course, no trip to Dallas would be complete without a trip to Southfork Ranch – the location of the TV show of the same name!
It was a pretty hectic but nonetheless enjoyable week – and the itinerary could be extended to include Houston (for the NASA Space Centre) and the Gulf Coast.
Texas also makes a fantastic (and safe) fly-drive destination where visitors are given a genuine country-western welcome.

Yee-haw pardners ! Y’all come visit real soon, y’hear!
