Kent had already been in the travel industry for many years before deciding to launch his own agency, Select World Travel in 1987 – with the intention of providing a bespoke service for discerning travellers as an alternative to the run-of-the-mill service offered by the average high street travel agent.
During his long career, Kent has visited most parts of the world – both on and off the beaten track – in the course of which he has amassed an almost encyclopaedic knowledge.
He is also a cruise enthusiast – having experienced life at sea aboard the ships of most of major cruise lines including, Cunard, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas, Sea Dream, Seabourn, Silversea.
Another outstanding and very different cruise was exploring Myanmar’s Ayearwady river aboard Belmond’s luxury “Road to Mandalay”. As Kent observes, “River cruises are the ideal way to explore a country or countries without the hassle of unpacking and packing in a different hotel every two or three nights”
Train travel (presently undergoing a revival) is another of Kent’s favourite ways of experiencing different cultures – some of his most memorable journeys being aboard The Belmond Venice-Simplon Orient Express, the Belmond Eastern and Oriental (Singapore, Malaysia & Thailand) and The Belmond Royal Scotsman – widely regarded as the most luxurious train in the world – the ideal way to explore the beauty of the Scottish Highlands in pampered luxury.
The destination closest to Kent’s heart is Venice – in his words, “ The most beautiful and romantic city home to some of the most beautiful art and architecture in the world”.
No one was more sorry than Kent when the iconic Concorde was scrapped as he was instrumental in organising many Concorde/Orient Express trips between London and Venice from between 1982 and 1987.
Next on Kent’s travel ‘Bucket List’ is a much-anticipated trip in 2017 to Peru and Chile – the highlight of which will be to experience South America’s only luxury sleeper train, The Belmond Andean Explorer, one of the highest train journeys in the world, travelling from Cuzco to Arequipa via Lake Titicaca.
He has yet to make up his mind whether or not to register for a Virgin Galactic flight to the edge of space!
There is nothing Kent enjoys more than sharing his experiences and knowledge with other people and helping them get the most out of their peregrinations
